The franchise industry in the United Kingdom has come a long way since 1994 when the British Franchise Association first started compiling industry data. Consider some of the most recent industry statistics and what they could mean for your business.

To date, there are 930 franchises operating in the United Kingdom.

930 franchise systems and 22,400 individual franchisees represents a large and growing portion of the UK economy. Current numbers also reflect an 11% increase in franchising numbers since the recession began back in 2008.

There are approximately 561,000 people working for UK franchises.

Over the past five years, the franchising job market has expanded more than 20% with approximately 561,000 UK residents working for a franchised business.

Franchise businesses represent a growing contribution to the UK economy.

The overall economy has shrunk 2.5% over the past five years while the contribution of franchise businesses has grown 20%. Franchise businesses are a substantial contributing factor to the stabilization of the post-recession UK economy.

Many UK franchises are exceptionally profitable, according to franchisees.

Surveys conducted by the BFA indicated that 92% of franchisees say their business is marginally profitable at minimum, while 49% indicate “quite profitable” or “very profitable.” Over half of franchisees report good profitability.

  • The average age for a franchise owner in the UK is 47.
