Jeff Longley joined Mr.Electric in 2008 and now owns a £1million-a-year, family run business.
What made you choose a Mr.Electric franchise?
My son had just passed his electrical exams but, as we were just coming into the recession, couldn't find any work. Mr. Electric provided an immediate income stream for both of us. I had a bit of inside knowledge too; I'd built and sold a couple of franchises by then and knew many of the people behind Mr.Electric.
So do you need any previous business or electrical experience?
No, you definitely don't. To be honest, I still don't really understand the difference between an amp and a watt! But I do know why customers choose Mr. Electric, and I know how to get the best out of the trained technicians who work for me. This is a management franchise, and so the most important attribute you can have is an ability to lead and motivate others.
Success is all about having the right attitude – it's got nothing to do with skills or experience. I left school with just one O-level and now I'm sitting on a million-pound-a-year business that delivers a very healthy income for me and my family.
What has been the biggest benefit of joining Mr. Electric?
It's definitely the large national accounts we've been able to secure. If we were independent we wouldn't get a look in with companies like British Gas and B&Q. Big corporate accounts can only be won with the reputation, assurances and insurances that another corporate company, like Mr. Electric, can deliver.
Our professional branding gives us a huge advantage, the website really helps, and the team at head office are good at generating new business for franchisees.
